Here are five things you didn't know about "Dragon Ball Super" star Goku:
Warning: "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F" and "Dragon Ball Super" spoilers are ahead
1. Goku is based on a character named "Son Wukong" from an ancient Chinese proverb called "Journey to the West"
Son Wukong was a humanoid monkey with a variety of supernatural powers, including super strength, shapeshifting and the ability to part water. Additionally, he is an extraordinarily skilled combatant, capable of fighting against gods and demons. Like Goku, he accompanies a group of friends to gather mystical artifacts and he has a tail.
2. Goku is close to 50-years-old
Due to his Saiyan heritage and incredible physical conditioning, Goku looks and performs like a man in his prime. Also, Goku died twice in "Dragon Ball Z," so his body didn't age for the nearly eight years he spent without his physical form. By the end of "Dragon Ball Z" Goku is chronologically 47-years-old.
3. He started out with an insanely low power level
A huge part of Goku's mythology is his ability to overcome his limits through force of will. Despite being a runner-up at the World Martial Arts Tournament when he was only 12-years-old, Goku was by no means a fighting prodigy. He was born with a putrid power level of two. Yes, Goku, the man that has gone on to become stronger than most gods started off with a power level of only two. To put that into perspective, Broly was born with a power level of 10,000.
4. Goku has actually let the world be destroyed twice
The "Dragon Ball" franchise is unique among hero stories in that the main characters have actually failed to save the world at least a few times. The first time was when Kid Buu blew up the Earth in a fight against Goku and Vegeta. Luckily, Dende, Elder Kai and Kibito-kai used the Namekian Dragon Balls to wish the Earth back into existence.
The second time came when Frieza blew up the earth in his second fight with Goku and Vegeta. Whis rewinded time  to
5. Goku has a last name
Casual fans probably don't realize that Goku has a last name. In the original Japanese dub, the character's full name is "Son Goku," or what would be "Goku Son" in America.
Fans can learn more about Goku when episode three of "Dragon Ball Super" premieres on Sunday, July 19.
